Greenlink Transmits Power for the First Time
The Greenlink Interconnector has successfully transmitted electricity for the first time between its converter stations in Wales and Ireland. This achievement is a key step in the project's development and testing phase.
With the cable installation work completed ahead of schedule by Sumitomo Electric Industries, the project is now moving into its final testing and commissioning phase. Full operational status is anticipated later this year.
The Greenlink Interconnector, a 500MW capacity subsea and underground electricity link, stretches approximately 190km between County Wexford in Ireland and Pembrokeshire in Wales. The project, which represents an investment of over €500 million, aims to enhance energy security, facilitate the integration of renewable energy, and potentially lower wholesale energy prices for consumers in both countries.
The interconnector utilizes MMC VSC technology provided by Siemens Energy and HVDC XLPE cables which were provided by Sumitomo.
Once fully operational, the Greenlink Interconnector will have the capacity to power approximately 380,000 homes. It will play an important role in helping Ireland achieve its ambitious target of 80% renewable energy by 2030, while also contributing to the UK's clean energy goals.
