Hitachi Energy has officially opened its newly expanded factory in Smedjebacken, Sweden, in the company's efforts to meet the rapidly growing demand for HVDC. This expansion is part of a broader initiative announced in November 2023, aimed at enhancing the production capabilities of HVDC technology and power quality solutions.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Ebba Busch, Sweden's Minister of Energy and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister, along with local government representatives and business leaders. The new facility spans 3,300 square meters and is set to boost the production of advanced power electronic valves crucial for HVDC transmission.

Construction of the factory began at the start of 2024 and has now reached completion, with production expected to commence early next year. This development not only extends the existing Smedjebacken site but also complements ongoing expansions at Hitachi Energy's Ludvika plant, which are anticipated to finish by early 2025.

Hitachi Energy's expansion of its Swedish operations is driven by an investment plan totaling approximately SEK 3.7 billion. This plan includes recruiting an additional 2,000 employees by 2027 to support the clean energy transition. Currently, Hitachi Energy employs over 6,500 people across 16 locations in Sweden, with major facilities in Ludvika and Västerås.

The expansion comes at a time when HVDC technology is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Since its inception by Hitachi Energy in 1954, HVDC has become a cornerstone of efficient long-distance electricity transmission and a key enabler of renewable energy integration worldwide. The company has successfully integrated more than 150 gigawatts of HVDC links globally, highlighting its pivotal role in transforming the global energy landscape towards greater interconnectivity.

In addition to technological advancements, Hitachi Energy is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within its workforce. The Smedjebacken factory exemplifies this commitment with initiatives aimed at achieving gender balance among its employees.

This strategic expansion reinforces Hitachi Energy's position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions and reflects its dedication to supporting Sweden's energy transition goals.
