Prysmian Group has initiated offshore installation activities for a groundbreaking interconnector project linking Sicily, Sardinia, and the Italian mainland. The €3.7 billion Tyrrhenian Link, developed by Italy's transmission system operator Terna, will establish a double submarine HVDC cable connection with a power capacity of 1,000 MW and a total length of approximately 970 kilometers.

On February 7, Prysmian announced that its cable laying vessel (CLV) Leonardo da Vinci had begun the offshore installation work for the project. This installation marks a significant milestone for the sector as it will be the first time an HVDC cable is laid at a depth of 2,150 meters, setting a new record.

The Tyrrhenian Link consists of two main sections: 1) The East Section: Spanning 490 kilometers, this section connects the Fiumetorto landing point in Termini Imerese, Sicily, to the Torre Tuscia Magazzeno landing point near Battipaglia in Campania. 2. The West Section: Covering 480 kilometers, this section links the Fiumetorto landing point to the Terra Mala landing point in Sardinia.

The project is expected to be operational by 2028.
