UK & France Explore Extra 1GW of Interconnection Capacity

British energy regulator Ofgem and its French counterpart, CRE, have agreed to explore further opportunities for electricity interconnection between the two countries with capacities of around 1 gigawatt (GW), Ofgem said on Thursday.

The two countries already share three electricity links totalling 4 GW, with several more projects having been mooted in recent years.

Ofgem has granted regulatory approval for two additional projects between France, FAB Link and GridLink, it said.

However, a study by CRE found that while a capacity of around 1 GW of new interconnection could be beneficial for France, this depended on how costs and revenues are being distributed.

The two regulators agreed to hold further discussions to address higher costs for key components and bottlenecks in the national grids and will consider the issue of cost and revenue sharing between the two countries, they said.

They plan to publish an updated joint statement on regulatory positions by the end of October 2025, they added
